It may be best when deciding to purchase a new Bible to get two Bibles. One that is more literal and one that is more readable. That way, but comparing both you can get the best of both worlds. It is NOT recommended that you even consider the TNIV or the NRSV as both have adopted gender neutral language as an accommodation to modern culture.

With that in mind, one recommendation would be to get a New American Standard (NAS) and a New International Version (NIV).

You may be asking, where is the King James Version? The KJV was translated before many of the oldest manuscripts were discovered. Nevertheless, it can be a useful translation and many prefer the formal language it uses. To read a review of the KJV, click here.
